General update
We countdown to the new government’s first Budget scheduled for 30th October 2024. Much attention has been focused on the PM’s contribution to the HM Treasury coffers in terms of returning gifts and hospitality that may be frowned upon in the future. There has been a lot of narrative around where gaps in funding need to be closed with the cabinet wobbling around the winter fuel allowance cuts. Some of the pre-election alliances are looking a little fragile. What does this all mean? Bodies like the Institute for Fiscal Studies had previously warned the new government that it was unlikely they could find headroom for more spending without difficult tax and borrowing trade-offs.
